While I’d love to see a blockbuster appointment like Klopp or Guardiola take the reins, that possibility seems very remote as Klopp has been very public about his need for rest. Pep seems equally unlikely with his contract at City still having time to run. Eddie Howe seems a more realistic appointment, but I get the impression he feels at home with the Geordies. With no European football distraction next season, Howe might well fancy his chances at a domestic trophy.

My money is on Lee Carsley at 9/4 with Betfred. His appointment would likely be the best-case scenario with the Football Association as he knows the English set-up well and like Southgate is unlikely to cause many issues for the FA. He is a proven winner with success with the U21 team and would be a safe pair of hands.
